At a ceremony held in Austin, TX on January 27, 2025, LBJ School Dean JR DeShazo installed Professor of Practice and Intelligence Studies Project Senior Fellow James “Paul” Pope as the Lloyd Hackler Chair in Ethical Leadership. The Hackler Chair has been vacant since 2019 with the retirement of LBJ Senior Lecturer BGEN (Ret.) Dr. Howard Prince. In his remarks, Dean DeShazo recognized Professor Pope’s exceptional leadership and contributions to the School’s national security program, including teaching, mentoring, and curriculum development in this growth area. ISP Director Steve Slick congratulated Pope for his “extraordinary record of high integrity leadership with over more than 50 years of public service as an Army officer, intelligence officer, and educator both within CIA and at The University of Texas”.
In the Spring 2025 semester, Professor Pope is leading PA325 “Intelligence and National Security” – – a gateway course for UT undergraduate students interested in understanding the U.S. Intelligence Community and its role supporting officials charged with developing America’s foreign and national security policies. During the Fall 2024 semester, Pope led graduate-level seminars in “Intelligence and National Security” and “Thinking, Writing, and Briefing for National Security”.
Professor Pope’s ISP colleagues joined in congratulating him for this well-deserved honor.
