ISP Participates in Task Force on Technology and Intelligence

News | January 15, 2021

The Center for Strategic and International Studies recently released Maintaining the Intelligence Edge: Reimagining and Reinventing Intelligence Through Innovation, the final report of a year-long Task Force convened to study the opportunities and obstacles to integrating emerging technologies into intelligence missions. The Task Force report and a link to the January 14, 2021 (virtual) briefing by the Task Force staff and commissioners is available HERE.

The CSIS Task Force, chaired by former PD/DNI Stephanie O’Sullivan and DNI-designate Avril Haines, included twelve commissioners including ISP Director Steve Slick. The Task Force warned that artificial intelligence will transform the Intelligence Community’s mission, that the primary obstacle to successful innovation and adaptation by the IC is cultural, and that the IC’s failure to adapt its missions, tradecraft, and workforce will erode our IC’s advantage in technology and invite diminished relevance to US policymaking. The ISP Director described the pervasive impact digital technology is already having on human intelligence operations, counterintelligence, and covert action. The Task Force report includes dozens of recommendations for consideration by the incoming administration and congressional oversight committees.
